Warehouse racking refers to the storage system specifically designed for organizing and maximizing storage space in a warehouse or distribution center. It involves the use of various types of racks and shelving systems to efficiently store goods and materials.

Warehouse racking systems are designed to streamline operations, improve inventory management, and optimize space utilization within a warehouse or distribution center. When selecting a warehouse racking system, factors such as product dimensions, weight capacities, inventory rotation requirements, accessibility, and the specific needs of the facility should be considered to ensure an efficient and effective storage solution.

Warehouse Racking Features

Selective Pallet Racking: Selective pallet racking is the most common type of warehouse racking system. It consists of upright frames and horizontal beams that create multiple levels of storage for palletized goods. Each pallet is directly accessible, allowing for easy picking and inventory management.

Drive-In and Drive-Through Racking: Drive-in and drive-through racking systems maximize storage density by allowing forklifts to drive directly into the rack structure. Drive-in racking has a single entry point, while drive-through racking has entry points on both ends. These systems are suitable for storing large quantities of homogeneous products with a last-in, first-out (LIFO) inventory rotation.

Push-Back Racking: Push-back racking is a dynamic storage system that utilizes inclined rails and carts. Pallets are loaded onto carts and pushed back into the racking system. When a new pallet is loaded, it pushes the previous pallet back, allowing for dense storage and efficient space utilization. It operates on a last-in, first-out (LIFO) inventory rotation.

Pallet Flow Racking: Pallet flow racking uses gravity to move pallets along inclined roller tracks within the racking system. Pallets are loaded from one end and flow smoothly to the other end, allowing for high-density storage and first-in, first-out (FIFO) inventory rotation.

Cantilever Racking: Cantilever racking is designed for storing long, bulky, or irregularly shaped items such as lumber, pipes, or furniture. It consists of vertical columns with horizontal arms that extend outward. Cantilever racking allows for easy access and retrieval of items without front column interference.

Mezzanine Racking: Mezzanine racking systems utilize the vertical space within a warehouse by installing a raised platform or mezzanine level. This creates additional storage or work areas. Mezzanine racking can be combined with other types of racking systems to maximize storage capacity.

Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS): AS/RS are advanced warehouse racking systems that use automated machinery, such as robotic cranes, to handle the storage and retrieval of goods. They maximize efficiency and optimize space utilization by automatically selecting and moving items from racks to picking stations.

Wire Decking and Accessories: Wire decking is commonly used with warehouse racking systems to provide a sturdy and level surface for pallets. It offers ventilation, visibility, and fire safety features. Additionally, various accessories such as dividers, bins, and label holders can be used to enhance organization and efficiency within the racking system.
